Let’s get to the bottom of your heel pain and figure out what to do about it.heel pain

You want to go for that jog but as you get out of bed a shooting pain runs through your heel. Ouch! What could that be? Heel pain is an all too common issue and our Brooklyn, NY, podiatrists, Dr. Gary Saphire and Dr. Asher Rudowsky, are here to tell you more about what could be going on and what you can do to get rid of your heel pain.

What could be causing my heel pain?

There are many reasons why you could be dealing with heel pain. The common culprits include:

  • Plantar fasciitis (the most common)
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Sprains
  • Fractures
  • Bursitis

Even though plantar fasciitis is the most common cause this doesn’t necessarily mean that this inflammatory condition is what’s going on for you. This is why it’s important to visit our Brooklyn foot doctors if:

  • The pain is severe
  • You can’t put weight on the foot
  • The pain appears suddenly
  • The pain is accompanied by swelling
  • The pain doesn’t improve within a couple of days

How can I treat my heel pain?

Usually, the first course of action is to treat the pain and other symptoms from home. These more conservative options include avoiding certain activities that could make the pain worse and resting your foot as much as possible.

Besides making sure you are wearing footwear that not only fits properly but also offers your feet the support they need, you may also benefit from bracing or splinting the foot or wearing custom orthotics for additional support, stability and shock absorption.

If these measures do not work then we will need to employ more aggressive measures such as steroid injections (for severe swelling or pain), shockwave therapy (which can be effective for severe or chronic cases of plantar fasciitis) or surgery (often the last resort when no other treatment options have worked).

If heel pain is dragging you down and these solutions aren’t helping then it’s time you turned to the foot experts at Parkway Podiatry in Brooklyn, NY. Call us to schedule an appointment right away so you can get back to what truly matters.
